What Is Backflow?
Backflow happens when water flows the wrong way in your plumbing — back toward the public water main instead of into your home or business. At cross-connections, where drinking water meets another source, this can pull contaminants into the clean water supply.
Common Cross-Connections
- Garden hoses submerged in pools or chemical sprayers
- Irrigation systems tied to potable water lines
- Fire sprinklers, boilers, or industrial equipment
A main break, firefighting draw, or equipment failure can cause pressure drops that allow polluted water to flow backward through these connections.
